32 people were killed and at least 85 were injured after a passenger train collided with an oncoming cargo train in Greece on an intervening night between Tuesday and Wednesday. Several train coaches got derailed and at least three caught fire after the crash which took place in Tempe.
Konstantinos Agorastos, the governor of the Thessaly region, said that the collision was "very strong". He added that the first four coaches of the passenger train derailed, while the first two coaches were "almost completely destroyed". Agorastos said around 250 passengers have been evacuated safely. Around 350 people were traveling on the train.
In a televised address, fire service spokesman Vassilis Varthakoyiannis said the evacuation process is underway. He added that the rescue efforts were hindered by the severity of the collision between the two trains.
Rescuers wore headlamps to see through the thick smoke and pulled out pieces of mangled sheet metal from the crashed rail cars to search for people trapped under the debris.
